How to Inspect Your Car's Oil: A Comprehensive Guide from ATO Auto Repair Team

Maintaining the health of your car requires more than just filling up the gas tank and occasional car washes. One critical aspect of car maintenance is regularly checking and changing your oil. Here at ATO Auto Repair, we understand that not everyone is an automotive expert, so we've put together this simple guide on how to inspect your car's oil.

Why Check Your Oil?

Your car's engine is made up of numerous moving parts. Oil provides lubrication to these parts and prevents overheating. Over time, oil can get dirty or low, which can lead to increased wear and tear on your engine. Regularly checking your oil helps ensure your engine stays healthy and runs smoothly.

Step-by-Step Guide to Checking Your Oil

1. Park on Level Ground: To get an accurate reading, your car should be parked on a flat surface and turned off for at least 10 minutes to allow the oil to settle.

2. Locate the Dipstick: The dipstick is usually marked with a brightly colored handle. If you're not sure where it is, check your vehicle's owner manual.

3. Remove and Clean the Dipstick: Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel. This ensures you get an accurate reading.

4. Reinsert the Dipstick: Put the dipstick back into the tube and push it all the way in.

5. Check the Oil Level: Pull the dipstick back out and look at the oil on the end of it. There should be two marks on the dipstick - the oil level should be between these marks. If it's below the lower mark, you need to add oil.

6. Inspect the Oil’s Color and Consistency: Fresh oil is amber and somewhat transparent. If the oil is dark and dirty or has a milky appearance, it may be time for an oil change. If the consistency is gritty, it's definitely time for a change.

When to Change Your Oil?

Generally, it's recommended to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but this can vary depending on your car's make and model, as well as your driving habits. Always refer to your vehicle's owner manual for specific recommendations.
